Letters to No one in Particular: A Discussion and Illustration of Spinoza's 'Fragment or On the Improvement of the Understanding

Overview

Letters to No One in Particular is presented to discuss and to illustrate Spinoza's 'Fragment', On the Improvement of the Understanding . The goal is to present a faithful rendering, in simple language, of Spinoza's discovery of the existence, presence and operating functions of the Human Mind. This pamphlet is written for the intelligent and curious reader who recognizes that we as humans are unique and not comparable to any other creatures on earth. Spinoza detailed our uniqueness and further explained our mind's ability to connect us with the Whole of Nature . Without any outward assistance from some divinity we have been the architects of all of our achievements. We need now to accept responsibility for our past and to continue to shape the future for all of those who have labored before us and for those who will follow. Using Spinoza's concepts we will detail the methodology for recognizing the power resident in the mind and together work to move this human endeavor forward into the future. It wiil require some effort to wrestle ourselves away from the current widely held misconceptions and the beliefs that dominate both science and all religion: That human perception is innately and inherently flawed . Please feel free to join us in the difficult task that awaits. It will require the efforts of many minds to change these erroneous conventions which currently hold sway.

Author Information

From an early age the author was a cheer leader for the human mind but had not the means or experience to express the thought clearly. After years of research and study he met with Spinoza's work. A new world opened up which on his own the author would not have uncovered. 30 years later and after mastering the complexity of Spinoza's masterwork: Ethics Demonstrated in the Geometric Method , he realized a responsiblity had befallen him. This pamphlet and discussion and illustration is an effort to thank and to attempt to repay the Blessed Spinoza for his mastery and incomparable intelligence and insight.
