Reviews

Amanda Wilson's latest book does not disappoint. I really like the idea of the book as letters from inspiring leaders, directly to the target audience of young Black leaders in education, without any interference from Amanda as the editor. I also like the addition of the pictures which really personalised each letter. The advice to find appropriate support and to develop robust networks was a strong theme and is excellent advice for any aspiring leader. Each author comes across as incredibly dedicated and supportive of the next generation of leaders. They are great examples of leaders with strong growth mindsets and belief in harnessing potential. The book will be a valuable contribution to the coaching arena.; Siobhan Lynam (Deputy Director of D&I, EMCC UK)

"I""n the words of Rita Pierson ‘Every child deserves a champion’ and that’s the same for Aspiring Leaders. ‘Every teacher and aspiring leader deserves a champion’ and this is what this book provides - a Champion for every black teacher and leader in education and beyond. The honesty and transparency provided by each contributing Headteacher is enriching and inspiring. They are clear about the struggle, but also clear about the ability to achieve Headship and thrive! Their various experiences and routes into their current roles enables those currently climbing the ladder to find a number of ways to connect their own stories, providing hope that no matter what they are currently facing - achieving Headship is certainly possible. This book is the first of its kind and just flicking through the pages seeing the beauty of black inspiring leaders is a joy. The book screams ‘We Are Here and You Can Be Here Too’ I have no reservations that this book will be a source of strength, direction and reassurance for those striving to progress in the world of educational leadership. Author Information

Amanda Wilson is the headteacher of a one-form entry primary school in South London and has over 20 years' experience in the education sector. She has a passion for supporting teachers and as a qualified coach and psychotherapy student helps individuals to understand how their behaviours, thoughts and feeling impact the choices they make. 9:10 Publishing was set up by Amanda in 2014 after she observed a lack of books aimed at Black British young people written from a Black British perspective. Rather than rely on traditional publishing houses to take up her ideas, she looked into what was required to build a successful imprint and then went about setting up her own.To date there have been three books published under the 9:10 Publishing imprint: Letters to a Young Generation 1 and 2 and Amanda's first novel, Karaoke, Praise the Lord. Letters to a Young Generation: Aspiring School Leaders is the third book in the Letters to a Young Generation series and is due for release in September 2023. Amanda is a contributor to TES, delivers training on the Teach First NPQ courses and sits on a number of education committees within the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
