This guide to drawing monsters has a lot going for it. Drool-worthy subject aside, it is completely appropriate for youngsters in the primary grades, as every creature is formed from a combination of the same basic shapes: oval, square, triangle, circle, rectangle, and half circle. These form an imaginative array of 'chompers, ' eyes, scales, paws, talons, and manes that can be added, Mr. Potato Head-style, onto a monster's body. Most monsters can be completed in four to eight steps, which are clearly and simply demonstrated--new lines or shapes are depicted in red--without needing textual instructions. These friendly or silly-looking beasts are grouped into categories, giving kids enticing options, such as one-eyed, toothy, furry, undead, and flying. This volume in the Let's Draw with Crayola series is a great entry point into drawing that will make kids excited to create art and feel accomplished as they improve their abilities. Whether they're a Cyclops Susan or Undead Fred, this book will unleash young artists' monster muses. --Booklist --Website
