Lessons From Mom: How Do I Do This Without You?

Overview

Navigating motherhood while grieving a mother's loss, I share heartfelt lessons learned from her wisdom. This journey blends humor and spirituality, offering guidance for new parents facing today's challenges in raising children with love and resilience. At 28, I found myself pregnant with my first child while my mother faced the final stages of brain cancer. These should have been joyful months, yet they were filled with emotional turmoil as I watched my best friend decline. Losing my mother just months before my child was born left me feeling unprepared and overwhelmed. I had no script for motherhood, relying solely on the lessons I learned from her. In Lessons From Mom, I recount the ten invaluable parenting lessons my mother imparted during my first 28 years. Through heartfelt and often humorous stories, I reflect on her wisdom and the tools she provided that helped me navigate the complexities of motherhood. Each lesson is accompanied by personal anecdotes from my own parenting journey, illustrating how her teachings continue to resonate in my life. Throughout the book, I weave in references to biblical verses that support the themes of love, resilience, and faith. These spiritual connections aim to create a bridge for readers, enriching their experience and offering comfort in their own parenting challenges. This memoir is not just a tribute to my mother but a resource for new parents seeking guidance in a world that often feels daunting. By sharing my journey, I hope to inspire others to embrace the lessons from their own mothers and cultivate a nurturing environment for their children. Join me in celebrating the enduring bond between mothers and their children, even in the face of loss.

Author Information

I am a 58-year-old mother of three, soon to be a grandmother. I grew up on Long Island and was raised Catholic, moving to Maryland in 1991. I come from a very close and loving Italian family, and I love the fact that I grew up with cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents close by. My mother's sudden Illness from brain cancer at age 62 shook us all, and our family was never quite the same after her passing. I began compiling stories about my mother while my sons were still quite young and my daughter had just been born. The purpose for this was to ensure that my children could know more about the grandmother that they never got to meet. Over the years, more and more stories made their way onto the pages, and I began adding my own anecdotes as a mother to the mix. As my spirituality grew, it seemed as though scripture was the last ingredient necessary to complete my manuscript. My mom's hard work and sacrifice enabled me to earn a biology degree, and I have worked as a Microbiologist for the past 37 years. Her own love of teaching sparked my desire and commitment to improve public education, and I am proud to have been a part of starting the first Classical Charter School in Maryland in 2013.This manuscript is a tribute to her, and I have felt the calling to get it published so that it could be of some comfort to other people who are trying to raise their own children in the absence of a loved one.
