This novel covers a short, but key period in his life - late 1499 and early 1500. The French have invaded Milan, the Duke has gone into hiding, and Leonardo is without a patron. He travels to Mantua and then on to Venice with his good friend, the mathematician, Luca Pacioli. Along the way they discuss the work they have done, the architecture they are seeing, and much more - all in an interesting story.

Catherine has been studying, teaching, and writing about Leonardo da Vinci for more than a decade. She enjoys bringing him alive to students of all ages - with stories of his art, his inventions, his life as a military engineer, and much more. She is saddened by the number of books that have been written with da Vinci as a main character that are not appropriate for family reading, and is on a one-person mission to help rectify the shortage of good books in that category. Catherine wrote her first non-fiction book on da Vinci more that ten years ago: Da Vinci: His Life and His Legacy, and has been researching him ever since. Her first novel, Leonardo the Florentine, brought her into the area of historical fiction, and was quickly followed by Leonardo: Masterpieces in Milan. Her goal in all her historical fiction is to make history interesting, and this latest novel is no exception! A recent trip to his birth home in Anchiano and his stomping places in Milan, Venice, and Florence re-energized her to study and write about this fascinating man.
