Gunter Tiess graduated as an Engineer in Natural Resources Management from the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria. Then he obtained a Ph.D. degree at the same University, title of dissertation ""Mining Law in the stress field between environmental protection and land use planning "". He is currently working at the University of Leoben, his main research topics are international mineral policy, mining and sustainability (legal, ecological, technological aspects). Since it was always his great interest he started study of law at the Karl-Franzens-University in Graz (Styria). During his work in Leoben his interest in the topic of legal basis principles in the field of minerals exploration and exploitation, and subsequently, for minerals policy grew. The study of law and the research in the field of mineral resources and mineral policy, led to the publication of auLegal Basics of Mineral Policy in Europe""and, in due course, to his second book ""General and International Mineral Policy"".
