Fr de Verteuil was director of the lay apostolate in the archdiocese of Trinidad for the past 23 years. It was during this time that he first became interested in the method of lectio divina. This is a method he has helped to spread in his home, in the Caribbean, in Ireland, Canada, and through the internet with the rest of the world. He was also for twelve years Editor and Managing Director of the Catholic News the weekly newspaper of the Archdiocese of Port of Spain, Trinidad. In a previous time he was for eight years the Rector of the Regional Seminary of the Caribbean. He has also been for twelve years the Provincial Superior of the Holy Ghost Fathers in Trinidad. He is now director of a Centre for Biblical Renewal.
