OverviewWilford Woodruff (1807-1898) was the fourth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Woodruff joined the Church in late 1833. Within six months, he had moved to Kirtland and joined the Prophet Joseph Smith and others in Zion's Camp. Over the next few years, he served several missions. He was ordained an Apostle in 1839 and became President of the Church two years after John Taylor's death in 1887. Woodruff was an indefatigable diarist. His numerous journals are among the most important primary sources for LDS Church history from the Kirtland era through Utah statehood. Leaves From My Journal is a brief autobiography prepared in 1881 covering his life through his first mission to England in 1839. This book is in the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic alphabet for writing English developed in the mid-19th century at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah).
