OverviewEducation at concentration camp memorial sites is undergoing radical change. Not only are the last eyewitnesses to Nazi rule passing away, but young people and their learning habits are also changing. A new approach to teaching is needed for tours of the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial site, which is aimed primarily at schoolchildren aged 13 to 18. The use of new media in learning seems to offer many advantages for this 'network generation', but it also harbours the potential for technical, organisational and ethical difficulties, especially at concentration camp memorial sites. In order to understand the opportunities and risks, two technology-supported tour modules were developed based on the camera function of the pupils' mobile phones. Seven educators from the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial site conducted trial tours using one of the two concepts and reported on their experiences. This confirmed many hopes, including higher motivation, increased discussion among the group of students, closer observation of the sites and long-term storage of personally relevant visual impressions.
