Learning from the Parables of Jesus

Overview

One third of the Synoptic Gospels are of Jesus' parables of his ethics and theology and which are generally taken from Jewish real-life situations. But how much or how little of each parable's details were meant to be allegorized i.e., understood at a second level of meaning? Since the time of Augustine there was a seeking of this second level of meaning from every fine detail. However, from the end of the 19th century a different approach began to be used as based on the work of scholar Adolph Julicher who dispensed with all allegory and treated the parables as only metaphors and with each providing only a single lesson. However, from 1990 Professor of New Testament Craig Blomberg has shown that the above-described approaches are extreme and that, in fact, the better approach is to realize that there are allegorical meanings in the parables, but they are limited to the primary figure and subordinate figures in each parable. This leads to a general pattern of parables of some with three lessons, some with two lessons, and some with only one lesson. This means that the parables are categorized as either three-point or two-point or one-point so that the spiritual truths and lessons given by Jesus can be clearly seen. So, in this 13th volume of Concise Studies in the Scriptures I have examined 34 of Jesus' parables along with several of his similes and analogies. These are explained by taking the same general approach as that of Craig Blomberg, but with a significant amount of reference to several other scholars and commentators. Furthermore, for each parable the full text of Scripture is set out.
