OverviewLeadership and Challenges in Medical Physics: A Strategic and Robust Approach aims to help present aspiring future medical physics leaders with effective, strategic and robust leadership skills in a world dominated by austerity economics, inter-professional competition and sometimes unchecked commoditization. Chapters are dedicated to healthy leadership and leadership styles, organizational politics, organizational psychology and negotiating skills. A compendium of SWOT themes provides leaders with a ready resource of possible ideas to trigger initial SWOT brainstorming and discussions when developing strategic plans with their own group or team. In addition, the script is peppered with reflection/discussion points or case studies to promote a systematic and well-thought out approach to strategic planning. Medical physicists working in the clinical environment undergo a structured education and training programs to keep on track with the fast progress of technological development in their field. Medical physicists feel that these programs provide little experience in how to deal with the real-world issues facing them when they move from the relative security of their academic physics departments to the realities of modern, multi-professional healthcare systems. This book guides a professional medical physicist to become a strategic and robust leader, emphasizing that a people-oriented approach to leadership is crucial for team motivation and stressing the difference between leadership and management. It is divided into 10 chapters to narrate various aspects of leadership and its influence on growth and recognition of the profession. The text is laced with reflection/discussion points or case studies to promote a systematic and well-thought-out approach to strategic planning. I agree with the point of view of the author that no book will turn someone into a leader—ultimately a person has to make oneself a leader! The book is recommended for medical physicists, postgraduate students and educators in health professions. Reva Garg 2021 Optics and Photonics News, The Optical Society -- Reva Garg * Optics & Photonics News * For a person like me, who is more than ten years in the position of leading a Medical Physics department, it was very interesting to read this book. It is well structured and includes learning objectives and exercises (reflection / discussion points) comparable to a textbook. Almost all aspects of leadership in our professional environment, even those I never have thought about before, are covered. In addition, some general aspects of the role and the challenges of Medical Physics nowadays are discussed. The book is very helpful to reflect on one's own way of leadership, which even a team leader with long term experience should think about from time to time. And for those younger colleagues who have a leadership career in mind, it provides an outlook to all the things they may have to deal with. If both try to keep the extensive content in mind we could gain substantial improvements in leadership in the Medical Physics field and in promoting our profession, not only in the healthcare environment. In the foreword, the author stated that he hopes ...to provoke much needed discussion and debate... . Yes, I think its time to do so. Nils Wegner 2020 EFOMP Winter News Issue, European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics -- Nils Wegner * EFOMP-EMP News * This book is published in the IPEM-IOP series in Physics and Engineering in Medicine and Biology. It encourages the reader to re-think the role of medical physicists in modern health care systems. It is based on the EUTEMPE Modul MPE01 course, organized by the author since 2015. While this course focusses on medical physicists in diagnostic and interventional imaging, the current book uses a more general approach for medical physicists in all radiation-related disciplines. Altogether, this book can be very helpful, especially for young medical physicists on the way to a leading position, while it is also always worthwhile to reflect on one's own style of leadership and professional role in later years of experience. Dr. Daniella Schmitt 2020 EFOMP Winter News Issue, European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics -- Dr Daniella Schmitt * EFOMP-EMP News * Medical physicists as clinical scientists are facing tremendous challenges in their professional clinical practice and administration in the real world. Confronted with strategic planning, project planning, team building, negotiation skill, manpower development, ...they are more confused and frustrated. Furthermore, our education and training programmes do not equip them in dealing with the complex issues in healthcare settings. Professor Caruana, a very experienced academic as well as clinical medical physicist, is the originator and leader of the EFOMP-EUTEMPE module MPE01 on 'Leadership in Medical Physics', advocates a contemporary practical approach for aspiring leaders. In this very readable 104-page 10-chapter book, the author aims to present aspiring future medical physics leaders with effective, strategic and robust leadership skills in a very competitive and uncertain world. He has in mind to impart healthy leadership and leadership styles, organizational politics, organizational psychology and negotiating skills. The author provides a compendium of SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) themes for leaders with a resource of several ideas to trigger initial SWOT brainstorming sessions when developing strategic plans with the team. It also has a compendium describing various leadership styles. This book is filled with reflection/discussion points or case studies to facilitate a systematic approach for strategic planning. It is also sprinkled with many words of wisdom. One that I particularly like is this; 'Please keep in mind that no book will turn you into a leader - Ultimately you have to make yourself one.' If you are curious to find out how you could survive and win the political game, then this primer is highly recommended for you. J Med Phys 2020;45:136-8. * Journal of Medical Physics * When I first took Caruana's book in my hands, I felt relieved and justified in a way. There are a lot of us, out there. After all, the book is dedicated, amongst others, to all Medical Physicists (MP) worldwide who strive daily to improve healthcare even when not always shown the appreciation they so rightly deserve . Being a low-profile person, it took me years and years to stand on my feet, to persuade my self in the first place and the others later, about the importance of our profession. The arising question is whether there was a shorter and easier way to obtain the self-respect and to gain the reputation and recognition I enjoy among my multidisciplinary colleagues nowadays. Caruana's book gives the answer: The MP as part of their basic education must be trained on how to become a leader. Caruana gives a strategic planning primer for MP leaders. He encourages MPs to identify, analyze and address their weaknesses, in such a way that they turn to strong points. He does not stop there. He provides MPs with a road map helping them to achieve the goal of becoming leaders, by analyzing the reasons and showing how happiness in a team drives to success and how important it is for a MP to have knowledge on organization psychology and organizational politics, along with the ability for negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. The author hopes that this book will stimulate leaders from other regions of the world to develop similar to his leadership modules of their own in their region . I wish that this book will motivate all MP's training centers all over the world to review their curriculum so that to include a course on leadership. Practice has shown that this is imperative for qualified MPs as well.
