OverviewThe autobiographical work attributed to St. Ephrem, the most noted theologian of the Syrian Church in the Patristic period, is presented here in a critical edition. This document is the main source for the image of the saint as a hermit in a cave. Initially essential background and critical questions about the manuscript are addressed by Duval, and then a critical edition of the Syriac text is given. Following the critical edition, Duval translates the Testament into French. Eighteen of the twenty-eight strophes are discussed in more detail following the translation of the Testament.
