OverviewThe Krak des Chevaliers is one of the most important and best-preserved medieval fortifications in Syria. Built in the 10th century, it represents the most powerful military base of the Order of St. John during the Crusades. Rebuilt after its destruction by earthquake in 1170, it underwent several monumental transformations, most notably after its conquest by the Mamluks in 1271, until the final demise of its military role in the 14th century. This volume presents the results of archaeological investigation at the Krak by a team of Syrian, Swiss, and Luxemburgeois researchers.
