Overview

The aim of this book is twofold. Firstly, it follows the emergence of the Catalan language, its appearance in the written field and its evolution. Secondly, it defines and analyses a textual topology of the Catalan language and establishes a chronological and geographical differentiation in its expansion. An introductory chapter, written by a linguist, povides a rigorous account of the appearance and evolution of the Catalan language until it became the common language of the Catalans. This is followed by a bibliography that provides an extensive overview of the working tools of the Catalan language, such as manuals, dictionaries, grammars and critical text editions. The second part, consisting of eight chapters, defines and closely analyses a typology of medieval Catalan texts.
