He previously taught at Columbia University and at Harvard University. He served as a Senior Advisor to the White House from 1979-1980 and as president of the American Sociological Association. He is the author of the best-selling book The Spirit of Community, a book on Privacy in a Cyber Age, as well as Law in a New Key, and The New Normal. He has written a number of law review articles as well as contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.
