Pope Atkins is research fellow at the Institute of Latin American Studies, University of Texas at Austin, and professor emeritus of political science at the United States Naval Academy, where he was a member of the civilian faculty from 1966 to 1993. He has lived and worked in Argentina and Ecuador and has been visiting fellow at the Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of London, the Fondo para el Avance de las Ciencias Sociales in Santo Domingo, and the international relations department at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 1990-1991 he held the Distinguished Visiting Tom Slick Professorship of World Peace at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs.
