Las Tres Vidas de Stefan Zweig

Overview

Before settling on The World of Yesterday as the title for his autobiography, Stefan Zweig had considered My Three Lives. It would have been an appropriate title, for his life was, in fact, comprised of three major stages: his early years in fin de siecle Vienna and subsequent rise up the literary ranks; the two decades of constant work, popular acclaim, and personal happiness with his first wife in Salzburg; and his self-imposed exile from Austria. In this biography, Oliver Matuschek meticulously examines the complex life of the Austrian writer, combing through previously inaccessible or unknown letters and documents to trace Zweig's journey from celebrated author to desperate man and suicidal man who would ultimately take his life in a small Brazilian town.
