OverviewThe 70's was a time of revolution. Black Power was in the air. The outer world encroaches, but school offers still a sheltered life. Yet, it is crunch time for the narrator, (whom we first meet in The Nowherians, and who is incarnated here as Doc.), and his classmates. For the band of upper sixers, like Symonds, the precocious son of an Australian expat, struggling to adjust, but intent on succeeding, and Cassius, whose brilliance is undercut with his twisted sense of humour, it is time to ramp up studies for final exams - success or failure at which would determine the next step forward. Those wilting under the pressure need to have their demons exorcised. And as for Madeleine, the narrator's girlfriend, it is a time to choose between one of the two roads that diverged in her yellow wood - a dilemma the narrator, too, faces after being introduced to her best friend, the slim but shapely and ever so beautiful, Dahlia. While the work predates the writing of The Nowherians by a decade, it is neither its prequel nor sequel. The first draft was written when the writer was a fledgling teenager, fresh out of his school days. Another fine work from a very talented writer. The 70's was a time of revolution.
