OverviewDuring the sacred nights of Obon, when the veil between the living and the dead grows thin, retired samurai Hagiwara Shinzaburō lives in quiet, grieving solitude. His wife taken by fever years earlier, he has withdrawn from the world, finding solace only in fading memories and the gentle rituals of the festival. On the first night, beneath swaying paper lanterns and curling incense smoke, he glimpses a woman of unearthly beauty passing his gate. Accompanied by a silent child-maid carrying a crimson peony lantern that burns with unnatural steadiness, she meets his eyes-and something long dormant awakens inside him. The following nights bring rain, longing, and her return. She introduces herself as Otsuyu, a widow bound by sorrow, and with each visit their connection deepens into desperate, reverent passion. She promises eternity beneath an ancient willow; he swears the same. The peony lantern becomes their shared heart, its rosy glow filling his once-empty house with forbidden warmth. But love from the other side carries a hidden price. Shinzaburō's appetite fades, his reflection grows strange, his skin thins to parchment. Neighbors glimpse skeletal outlines beneath silk; a monk warns of a yūrei draining his life-force. Protective ofuda burn away, salt lines break, and even the compassionate Kannon statue cracks under the weight of stolen devotion. As illusions peel back, Otsuyu's porcelain beauty gives way to grinning skull and yellowed bone. Her maid Oyone's silent stare reveals stitched lips and empty sockets. Yet Shinzaburō cannot break the vow. Hunger turns ravenous, flesh tears like wet paper, dreams rot into grave-soil ecstasy. The promise-eternal-becomes a noose of bone and longing. In the final embrace, two skeletons entwine on the futon, silk tatters draping ribs like wilted petals. The peony lantern burns between their skulls, radiant and undying, casting crimson light that defies time. Years pass; the ruined house glows eternally. On Obon nights, villagers still whisper of three figures walking with one crimson lantern-love that refused the grave, preserved forever in decay and light. A haunting Japanese ghost tale of obsessive passion, yūrei folklore, and the terrifying beauty of promises kept beyond death.
