Reviews

The collection of illustrations and narratives in this publication produced by Alice Chik, Susan Markose and Di Alperstein makes a valuable contribution to raising the visibility and audibility of our linguistic diversity beyond the individual linguistic communities themselves. Looking through the various body silhouettes with their vast range of languages thoughtfully placed in different areas around their bodies triggered my own somewhat self-indulgent stories at the start of this Foreword. More than any formal research paper or presentation, this publication is able to convey not only the variety of languages that are, quite literally, embodied in the student teachers' contributions, but also the deeply personal and emotional significance that the languages have for these individuals. Reading these explorations of plurilingualism, how could anyone ever again decide that it is a good idea to exclude any of their languages from our classrooms and other public spaces? Clearly language is intertwined with identity, so excluding a language is rejecting part of someone's identity (Terry Lamb, Foreword)
