Professor Reid is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2000), a Fellow of the British Academy (2008), and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (2005). George Gretton is Emeritus Lord President Reid Professor of Law at University of Edinburgh. From 2006 to 2011 he was a Commissioner at the Scottish Law Commission.
