He is a graduate of Stanford University where he also spent a year as a Professional Journalism Fellow. A veteran journalist, Bergman has reported from many parts of the world, Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, Central America, Canada, and the United States, primarily for the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter and the Christian Science Monitor. His first book, Tredje bordet fran hoeger, came out in Sweden in 1981 after his years as a foreign correspondent in Eastern Europe.
