Overview

"Laila wishes to paint the scene from her window on her canvas. However, there is no color anywhere in her house. She goes for a walk and touches everything with her magic paintbrush, which takes up the colors from the outside world. She happily returns home, makes her house and clothes colorful and then turns to her easel. But, when she looks outside, there is no color! Shocked and sad that she's caused everything to be grey and gloomy, Laila, finds a way to bring the colors back! Laila's Magic Brush is all about color, 50 pages with minimal text and 23 brilliantly colored illustrations. Plus an easy to understand description of primary and secondary colors for preschoolers. It makes a delightful read for parents and their little ones to enjoy. "" Keep your eye on Luthie for a host of fine children's books."" -- Grady Harp, Reviewer Hall of Fame"

Reviews

It is refreshing and warmly sentimental for a contemporary story for children to allow the man character to be a child, with whom everyone can associate and from whom everyone can learn. In this case our character is a little girl named Laila who wishes to paint on her canvas on her easel the scene from her window. However there is no color from which she can create. She goes for a walk and everything her brush touches takes up the color. She happily returns home, makes her house and clothes colorful and turns to her easel and makes her paints colorful - but when she looks outside there is no color! Everything is grey and gloomy. Laila is sad she has taken away the colors of the outdoors and in a swoop she connects with a rainbow and brings the colors back! The story ends with a brief but insightful explanation of primary and secondary colors - a factor that seems to be a trait Luthie M West respects - combining entertainment with learning. Absolutely charming writing and imagery. Children (and adults) will love this book and doubtless it will become the favorite bedtime story for the lucky owners - and their friends! Keep your eye on Luthie for a host of fine children's books. -- Grady Harp, Reviewer Hall of Fame This is a very enchanting book for young readers! The artwork is very engaging & vivid with the bright colors. At the end of the book is some nice info about colors, primary & secondary color wheels. A great idea for a teaching tool (I remember learning about the color wheel in art class when I was young!) I really enjoyed the story line; how clever to have a magic paintbrush! One that can take the color away from outside & reapplies that color to everything inside Laila's grey & gloomy house! I loved how each page brings color & life to Laila herself & her home. Now what to do when the color is gone from outdoors making it all grey & gloomy looking? It is a magic brush after all!! You will be delighted with the outcome! -- Kathy Lord What an exciting, great way to teach young readers about colors! Love it. -- Emma Price, ELP Books
