Ladder to Leader: My Journey From Failure to Fire to Financial Freedom is a memoir by Ryan D. Larson, a full-time firefighter, principal Investment Advisor, and Founder of FirstLine Financial, LLC. Founded in 2015, FirstLine Financial earned a Service Mark from the US Patent office for the company's intake process in 2020. Larson credits his time in the Phoenix Fire and other Arizona Fire Departments for teaching him organization and planning skills that inspired the company's intake process. In the second half of the book, Larson introduces financial terms and products, using terminology and giving examples that make them simple to understand. The book is interesting from a memoir perspective and shares information, including case studies, to explain the financial investing terminology clearly and concisely. Larson shares childhood struggles which lead to his failures and frustrations as a high school graduate. A twist of fate led Larson to the Fire Department Explorer Program, which fueled his interest in becoming a firefighter. The fire department entrance exam changed his mindset, giving him confidence he gained carried him through the many challenges he had yet to face.

Ryan Larson is the principal Investment Advisor Representative and Founder of FirstLine Financial. His favorite quote: Stop worrying about what you have to lose and start focusing on what you have to gain. Larson never enjoyed school but was successful in sports. He faced the fact that becoming a professional athlete would not happen for him. After high school, Larson floated from job to job while attending community college, which only frustrated him. Through a twist of fate, he got involved with the Explorer program of the Chandler Fire Department. That program convinced him to become a firefighter, which required passing a rigorous test that included math and reading comprehension. He had to take the aptitude test multiple times before passing, an experience that showed Larson how smart he really is. In addition, it taught him that he could meet any goal if he set his mind to it, which came in very handy while fighting fires and when he decided to learn about the stock market. Larson's family lived a modest life, so seeing the movie Wall Street made him very curious about the stock market. In addition, casual trading was something he enjoyed and was good at. The book describes the journey to earning his Series 7 and Series 66 licenses and starting his company that was granted a Service Mark by the US Patent Office in a short five years and is still a proud Phoenix firefighter.
