(Jean Dufournet, Professeur de classe exceptionnelle a la Sorbonne, Directeur litteraire des editions Champion, Co-Directeur du Moyen Age et de la Revue des langues romanes) At Long last an (excellent) edition of the important 'Passion Isabeau' has been created. It will prove an indispensable tool for historians of the early theatre. Professor DuBruck's scholarship is impeccable. (William C. McDonald, University of Virginia) This edition by an internationally known specialist in the fifteenth-century French theatre is certain to remain the standard for many years. (A.H. Diverres, PMLA) ...it is the merit of this edition to reassess, analyse and restate that relationship (with the fifteenth-century 'mysteres de la passion', notably that of Greban) in the light of modern scholarship. Professor Dubruck's introduction is lucid and prudent; she does not claim too much for her text, but carefully underlines its importance and characteristics. (Joan Crow, Medium Aevum) This is a valuable addition to the corpus of narrative passions which were so influential in the development of French biblical plays in the fifteenth century.Professor DuBruck has provided a clear and uncluttered text with a limited number of variants from other MSS and a fairly substantial glossary which suggests that the work is aimed partly at least at a student readership. ...students of the passion plays must be grateful that this important text is now available in a modern edition. (L.R. Muir, French Studies) ...we are greatly indebted to Edelgard DuBruck for making the 'Passion Isabeau' available for study. This work provides much insight into the affective life of that period. (Alan E. Knight, Speculum) This is a most competent edition, worthy of D.'s high reputation as a scholar. It is likely to remain for a long time the standard edition of a very important text for the study and deeper understanding of the fifteenth-century passion plays and the tradition from which they stem.
