«No importa cuántas veces penetre uno en este libro; al final siempre se pregunta lo mismo: ¿Cómo lo ha hecho? Y es que se trata de una novela sin forro. Quiero decir con ello que le das la vuelta y es exactamente igual por un lado que por otro: ni siquiera es fácil advertir, una vez colocada del revés, esa fina cicatriz que en los calcetines delata si se encuentran de uno u otro lado. No hay forma de verle las costuras. [...] La simpleza aparente del relato es tal que si uno va levantando capas de materiales narrativos en busca del motor primordial, cuando levanta el último velo no hay nada detrás. Nada. En eso, curiosamente, La metamorfosis nos recuerda a la vida.» It does not matter how many times one reads this book; in the end the reader will always ask himself the same question: how did he do it? The book itself is confusing in that it does not have a cover. If you turn it over, it is the same on one side as on the other. It's not easy to notice because there is no way to see the seams.
