Overview

L'oeuvre maîtresse de Newton, la Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica de 1686, avec sa création spectaculaire de la mécanique rationnelle, marquait-elle le début d'une authentique révolution scientifique, ou était-elle la simple synthèse des idées d'un Kepler, Galilée ou Hooke ? Une analyse des idées de Newton écarte cette dernière hypothèse par le simple fait que les Principia cherchaient précisément à démontrer la fausseté des approches antérieures. Pourtant, Newton subit un échec dans l'application de sa théorie de la gravitation à l'explication du mouvement de la Lune, échec qui marqua le développement de la mécanique céleste pendant tout le 18e siècle. Un Clairaut, un d'Alembert et un Euler doutaient de la validité de la loi newtonienne presque en même temps et leurs idées firent progresser la mécanique céleste qui atteignit l'état d'une science normale suivant Kuhn avec l'autre grande synthèse Le traité de mécanique céleste de P. S. de Laplace paraissant un siècle après les Principia de Newton. L'objectif du texte que l'on va lire est multiple. D'un côté il relate cet épisode crucial de l'histoire des sciences exactes au 18e siècle, d'un autre il fournit un exemple d'illustrations des théories épistémologiques toujours en vigueur aujourd'hui. Mais surtout il se veut une source d'information technique sur le développement des méthodes de mécanique céleste pendant l'ère de sa croissance phénoménale au 18e siècle qui en faisait alors la reine des sciences de la physique mathématique.

L'auteur, né en 1934, est docteur ingénieur et docteur en philosophie. Il a été président de l'École d'ingénieurs à Luxembourg. Il a donné des cours de mécanique et de philosophie dans cette école ainsi que dans les universités de Weimar et de Bamberg.
