Stevenson escribió La isla del tesoro cuando vio a su sobrino dibujar con acuarelas el mapa de una isla. Comenzó a ponerle nombres: la isla del Esqueleto, la colina del Catalejo, hasta escribir en la esquina superior derecha las palabras «la isla del tesoro». Tras una larga enfermedad, murió en 1894 en la isla de Upolu, en el Pacífico Sur, donde vivía entonces. ¿Encontraría su tesoro en esa isla?
