OverviewThe robbery and looting of the German armed forces in the USSR was followed by the transport of German cultural assets to the Soviet Union at the end of the Second World War. Several groups from different Soviet institutions were deployed for this, the main role being played by the trophy brigades of the art committee. The present volume illuminates the actors involved and presents the places and routes of relocation. The focus is on the relocated objects, the fate of which is traced on the basis of the transport, takeover and distribution lists of the Soviet trophy brigades in the years 1945 to 1947. The research shows that every work has its own exciting story of loss. Tens of thousands of cultural assets were identified and important works of art could be returned to their original collections within Germany. This volume is the first to present an overall representation of the war losses of German museums.
