Kuhli Loach Care: The Complete Guide to Caring for and Keeping Kuhli Loach as Pet Fish The Kuhli Loach (scientifically known as Pangio Kuhli) is a relatively small eel-like freshwater fish that belongs to the Loach family (scientifically known as Cobitidae). The Kuhli Loach is characterized by its small fins, four barbels around its mouth, a dorsal fin that starts well behind the middle of its body and slightly compressed sides. It also has a thin film of transparent skin that covers its eyes. A Kuhli Loach will normally have between 10 and 15 black vertical stripes that run down the length of its body with the remainder of its body being a pale salmon pink color. The Kuhli Loach originates from Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula. It is a nocturnal fish and very easy to startle - it will hide under tank ornaments or bury itself into the tanks substrate if it is scared.
