OverviewThe Kriegsmarine was the name used by the German Navy during the Nazi regime from 1935 to 1945, growing rapidly with naval rearmament under Plan Z, a large-scale plan calling for the construction of multiple naval vessels. The ships of the Kriegsmarine fought during both the Spanish Civil War and World War II. The Kriegsmarine's most famous ships were the U-boat wolf packs, constructed after Plan Z was abandoned on the eve of World War II. They were submarine groups which seriously harassed Allied convoys during the Battle of the Atlantic. Both the U-boats and pocket battleships were used to disrupt Allied shipping in the earlier years of the war. However, the adoption of convoy escorts later in the war greatly reduced the effectiveness of such naval strikes on shipping convoys. At the end World War II, the Kriegsmarine's remaining ships were divided up amongst the Allied powers and used for minesweeping. With over 1,000 photographs, this book provides a spectacular visual history of the uniforms, rank badges and insignia of the Kriegsmarine, in addition to the U-Boot crews. Those who enjoyed Deutsche Soldaten will be equally impressed by Laurent and Berrafato’s Kriegsmarine.
