Overview

"English Summary: The concept of Solomon as the wise king and founder of the temple in Jerusalem is part of the permanent inventory of Jewish, Christian and Islamic literature. But despite him having a glorious reputation, portraits of Solomon in the Old Testament tell contrasting stories. In ""Man and Myth"" Isaac Kalimi explores differing representations of Solomon, which are the result of diverging historical contexts, theological and didactic concepts, stylistic and literary techniques, and compositional methods. The unique nature of each of these representations is pointed out using precise comparisons of the characteristics of early and late biblical historians. In addition, Kalimi analyses contrasting presentations of Salomon's character, birth, naming, early life, ascension, as well as the construction of the temple in the Book of Kings and in historical accounts. While early texts stay close to their sources and provide a form of apology for Solomon's kingdom, including its more questionable aspects, sources in the later texts have been generously changed in order to portray Solomon's life as the chronicler would have wished it to be.
