OverviewKing John Aggery was a Fante born in the coastal town of Cape Coast, in modern-day Ghana. At the time, Cape Coast was the capital of the Gold Coast, a British protectorate. He became king in 1865, styling himself as King John Aggery of Cape Coast and Its Dependencies. From childhood, he had resented the intrusion of British authority into areas belonging to Fante rulers and leaders. Thus, when he became king, he used every opportunity to remind the British administrators of the boundaries of their governance. King John Aggery's pursuits set the stage for self-determination in the country, a cause taken on by nationalists, leading to an independent Republic of Ghana. King John Aggery's activism for civil liberties demonstrates that an individual's desire for change may influence generations.
