His interest in the Great War, inspired by stories of his Great Uncle Frank’s mercurial career on the Western Front serving with D Coy, 1/8th Worcestershire Regiment, began at an early age. James studied History at the University of Worcester and was awarded his PhD in 2004. During his time as a lecturer in Modern History, he delivered and published a number of papers examining the motivations and behaviours of Great War soldiers.
