Overview

Exploring the changes between the Old and New Testament provides an open window to the wide-ranging vision of God's work in the human race. It is actually a remarkable vision, which stretches from the beginning of the universe to the end of time as we know it. But many aspects of the Old Testament are difficult to understand today. The ancient origins of the Old Testament (OT) explains part of the difficulty. The OT was written thousands of years ago, in cultures and time periods very different from our own. These vast differences in culture make many practices in the OT seem unusual today. Understanding and making sense of the changes between the OT and NT is one of the key purposes of this book. Many changes become more understandable when you compare God's instructions for a nation (OT), with God's instructions for freely gathered communities of faith who follow Jesus as Messiah (NT). These changes will be highlighted in the chapters of this volume, along with other key principles for understanding differences between the Old and New Testament. God's greater purposes will be in view, along with current insights and concepts.

"""While M. A. Erickson faithfully delves into the differences between God's old and new covenants, he lifts the reader's eyes to the one true living God's amazing grace throughout all time and God's ultimately superior covenant through Jesus Christ. An edifying and engaging resource for all growing disciples of our Lord and Savior."" --Sylvia Rivera, teaching missionary ""M. A. Erickson has written the best exposition I have seen of the changes and the continuity between the Old Testament and the New. He expresses it in very similar ways to mine so that this is the book I wish I could have written. He deals very well with difficult issues like the use of the sword in the OT but no longer by the communities of faith in Christ. All Christians, especially teachers, should read this book."" --Roger Cotton, professor of Old Testament, Evangel University ""Mark A. Erickson provides valuable perspective on the old and new covenants. He provides more than just a few line-item comparisons. We are shown not only big-picture differences, but also what remains consistent and what issues are more fully developed. Erickson tackles difficult topics such as war, ethics, and the reliability of manuscripts, while keeping the main thing central. This book is full of practical help for serious students of the Bible."" --Dale Eytzen, missionary, AGWM"
