Kevin Garnett: All-Star on and off the Court

Overview

Kevin Garnett is the star forward for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association (NBA). In 1995, he became the first NBA player drafted out of high school in twenty years. In 2004, he was awarded the NBA Most Valuable Player Award. Off the court, Garnett has helped many charities, including a 1.2 million dollars donation to Oprah's Angel Network to help with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in 2005. Give your readers a great book about Garnett.

Reviews

Suitable role models are important in the development of young children. They provide examples of how one should live his or her life. Garnett is an outstanding athlete as well as an example of one who has not forgotten his past and is continually helping those who have not been as fortunate. The author has given us the history of Garnett's background, the accomplishments that he has achieved and information about the foundation that he has started to help others. Although the author is a sportswriter and journalist, his writing comes across as that of a radio or T.V. commentator, which is exciting. As you read, you can see Garnett moving down the court, feel his emotions and see the love that he has for the game and his teammates. One of the things that he is known for is his passion for the game and his willingness to be a team player. His stats are impressive, but what he does off the court is awesome. For those who are not completely basketball literate, a few more words could be added to the glossary: for example, double double, triple double, lock out. Also the first time a player's name is used it should be accompanied by his first name. I had to look up a couple of players in the glossary to find out their first names. This is part of the Sports with a Heart series., Children's Literature
