From 1993 to 2005, Filippo Maggia was the curator of photography at Galleria Civica di Modena. Since 1998, he has served as curator of Italian photography and manager of the historical photographic collection at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo di Torino. From 2001 to 2004, he took part in the Comitato Scientifico della Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Bologna. He was jury foreman of the Hasselblad Award 2004, in which he already took part in 2003. He was curator of the collection of Fondazione Sella di Biella, between 2002 and 2006, and curator of photography at Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa di Venezia, from 2006 to 2008. In 2007, Filippo Maggia was nominated chief curator of Fondazione Fotografia and of the contemporary photographic collections of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena. Since March 2013, he has been the Director and Head of Projects of Fondazione Fotografia, Modena. In 2007, he received a visiting fellowship from the Royal College of Art (London), and is currently a visiting tutor in their Photography Department. From 2000 to 2009, he taught History of Contemporary Photography and Design at the Istituto Europeo di Design di Torino. Since 2010, he has taught photographic documentation at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Catania. Between 1998 and 2004, Filippo Maggia was editor at BaldiniCastoldiDalai for the series Fotografia come Linguaggio. After that, until 2006, he was editor-in-chief at Nepente Editore. He has been an editor of Skira since 2006. He regularly writes for art periodicals, such as Il Giornale dell’Arte and collaborates with RAI, and Radio3 Suite.
