Keep Them Thinking!: Fun Ways to Engage Students in the Last Weeks of School

Overview

As the school year winds down, keeping students engaged in their own learning can be a challenge. As teachers, it seems we run out of time or have too much, but we don't necessarily want to start a whole new topic. That's where Keep Them Thinking! Fun Ways to Engage Students in the Last Weeks of School comes into play. These quick, hands-on and easy lessons will help you navigate the end of the school year while keeping your students involved in learning and curious enough to want more. Just how do you get that stick to balance on your finger? How many books was your tower able to hold? How do we stack cups without hands? Use these lessons to keep your students thinking through the last day of school and beyond!

Author Information

Deborah Krog taught in elementary school in California. After moving across the country, staying home for several years with her children, and 100's of hours of volunteer work, she decided to head back to the classroom to substitute once again. Realizing the classroom is where she wants to be, she has pursued a full time position as both a classroom teacher and an English as a Second Language teacher. While creative writing has been an enjoyable outlet for Deborah, taking her writing seriously has been a more recent challenge. Fortunately, meeting Alyce Garver changed all that. Deborah soon realized that writing for herself was not enough and sharing the work can be just as important as the process of writing and creating something. Why create something if you don't plan to share it? During Alyce Garver's career, she has worked, in parallel, in both the creative fields (fine arts, graphic design, and instructional design) and the corporate training field. Alyce is presently an adjunct college professor. As a fine artist, Alyce was actively painting from 2002-2012 and was represented by Galleries in Soho NYC New York, Boonton New Jersey, and two Galleries in Maine (under the nom de brosse of Randall Elliot). She plans to get back to fine art when her design and training careers calm down. Having an entrepreneurial outlook, Alyce's creative lightbulb will often light up when she conceives ideas or sees opportunities. In 1996 such a lightbulb lit up when her students said they found learning certain topics profoundly changed their work lives for the better. The idea for Small Size Topic Books was hatched and filed away. The realization of that concept would not transpire until several years later for a corporate outreach book and later again upon meeting the author Deb Krog. Deb's clever book idea dovetailed synergistically with Alyce's creative design and page layout skills - and Keep Them Thinking!: Fun Ways to Engage Students in the Last Weeks of School - was born.
