Who is Kawanabe Kyosai? Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889) was a Japanese artist who lived through the Meiji Restoration of 1868 was in the words of a critic an individualist and an independent, perhaps the last virtuoso in traditional Japanese painting. Many of Kyosai designs are comic, satiric, humorous and sketchy. Others are strange, weird and frightening. He was known as The Japanese Demon of Painting' and renowned to have invented Manga in 1874. What Is Manga? The paintings and print subjects of Kyosai are from traditional to bizarre and fantastic. He was incredibly imaginative and created designs that have no relations to any known art works of any other Japanese or Western artists.
