Overview

Katie's first-grade class is preparing for Autism Awareness and Acceptance Day. She already knows a lot about autism because her older brother Mikey is autistic. But when Miss Magee asks Katie to share what she knows with the rest of the class, Katie isn't sure what to do. Can she overcome her fear of speaking in front of a group? What if her words get stuck? As Katie balances her role as an advocate for her brother with conquering her own challenges, she shares the different ways people with autism engage with the world around them. Through Katie's eyes, readers learn that people with autism want love and acceptance just like everyone else.

Author Information

Amy McCoy is a former elementary school teacher who loved writing stories for her students so much, she became a children's book author. Now, instead of having her own classroom, she appears in schools around the country both in person and on screens as a visiting author. Amy is a mom who finds inspiration for her books from watching her own two children interact with the world. Her award-winning children's novel series, Little Big Sister, is read in third grade classrooms across the USA. When she's not writing her books or presenting in elementary schools about autism acceptance, you can find Amy practicing yoga, riding her bike, singing along to her favorite songs, or reading books (both with and without pictures) in her backyard. Amy lives in New York with her family.
