OverviewEnglish summary: Rome in the modern era was the cultural center of Europe and the epicenter of antiquity. Treasures were recovered from its debris, and on its pastures, palaces arose that were as magnificent as their ruined predecessors. Artists from all over the world have painted its landscapes. Yet at the same time, Paris was trying to become the new Rome and to outdo the old. The images and texts gathered in this volume based on an exhibition of the same name ""Kampf um Rom"" (Battle of Rome) originate predominantly from the 18th century. They tell of a contest, an unbreakable longing, a timeless fashion: the renewal and perpetuation of classical antiquity. The exhibition took place from February 2nd 2013 to April 4th 2013 in the auditorium of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg.
