She has always loved animals and has been fascinated by Caribbean culture since she was a teenager growing up in Mobile, Alabama. After graduating with a Ph.D. in Creative Writing from the University of Southern Mississippi, she moved to the U.S.V.I. to teach at the University of the Virgin Islands.
