Schmalleger taught criminal justice courses and chaired the Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice for nearly 20 years while at UNCP. He is the author of more than a dozen textbooks in the justice field. Catherine D. Marcum is the chair of the Department of Government and Justice Studies at Appalachian State University, as well as a professor of justice studies.
