After serving as a sergeant in the United States Army, he became a commercial pilot and spent much of his career as a major airline pilot; he currently is a corporate chief pilot. For nine years he was an adjunct professor of aviation at St. Cloud State University. He has an undergraduate degree in engineering and a master's degree in aeronautical science.
