Gaius Julius Caesar is one of the most influential men to have ever lived. He is inescapable as a figure of power and dominance and may be experienced directly and indirectly in myriad ways. Tom Stevenson worked for 35 years as a lecturer at the Universities of Sydney, Auckland, and Queensland, whence he retired in 2024 as associate professor of Classics and Ancient History. He served on various professional committees, including a stint as President of the Australasian Society for Classical Studies. His research is focused mainly on the politics and political ideas of Republican Rome in the first century BCE, with special attention to the careers of Caesar and Cicero, though in recent years he has also worked on historical novels and films set in the ancient world.
