Julian of Norwich: A Comprehensive Bibliography and Handbook

Overview

"The work is the most comprehensive, current record of research and scholarship concerned with explicating Julian of Norwich's Showings. This bibliography includes a handbook of information related to mystics contemporary to Julian, as well as information related to the life of the religious of Julian's era. Despite the growth of interest in Julian in the world of academics, as well as in the world of faith, no bibliography of scholarship devoted to Julian has been published since Valerie Lagorio and Ritamary Bradley included her in their bibliography ""The Fourteenth-Century English Mystics: A Comprehensive Annotated Bibliography"" (1981). After twenty-eight years, Julian deserves an updated and more complete record of the works her own writing inspired. Since 1981, further study of manuscripts of Showings has led to further discussion of the possible dates the manuscripts were written, as well as the order in which they were written. Further study of Julian's work better places her within her historical milieu, but has also led to discussion concerning whether her work exemplifies explicit orthodoxy, or implicit heterodoxy, concerning church teachings. Ongoing discussions of Showings such as these are reflected in the abundance of works devoted to Julian during the past two decades."
