OverviewJulian and Jonathan portray the relationship between Herman’s father, Julian, and her half-brother, Jonathan. Jonathan was born when Herman was 21 and the photographer became interested in the triangulation between them; the changing proximity and distance they share, and the peculiar feeling of looking in on a world to which she doesn’t fully belong. Over the years, the dynamic between them has ebbed and flowed–sometimes they were close and at other times further removed from one another. They have both dealt with the hardship of loss and its many painful consequences. The images of Jonathan throughout his youth, whether alone or with their father, chronicle these shifts and turns. With each photographic session, Herman attempts to get closer to him, to establish connection, to understand his inner world.
