Overview

C.V. Raman is best known to the scientific community for the effect which bears his name and other derivative terms. He was also a Nobel Prize winner in Physics. Little else is generally known about his life. Fiercely independent and critical of Government policies, Raman was often misunderstood and maligned; however his commitment to science and to its growth in India never wavered. This account deals with all these aspects of Raman's life and work and places them in their historical and cultural context. Numerous quotations help capture the mood and excitement of those times. The book is not only a lively biography of a colourful personality, but also required reading for anyone with a serious interest in and concern for Indian science.

Among the life stories of great men of science, this scientific biography stands out for providing insight into the evolution of a natural philosopher and scientist in a country which, though rich in traditions and cultural heritage, was a colony dominated by foreign rule . . . In many ways the story of Raman is also the story of evolution of organized scientific research in India, of which he was the pioneer . . . He came to be regarded as the foremost among the men of science of that country and one of the greatest in the world . . . In writing this book which appears to be the only comprehensive scientific biography of Raman, the author has rendered a valuable service to the science-oriented reading public. --Science A model of scientific biography, written with respect and affection for its subject but with a clear-eyed perception of his faults, in a relaxed and gently witty style. . . .makes us appreciate how unusual Raman must have been to produce such an abundance of creative science, first in the stifling colonial atmosphere of British India, and then in the turbulent struggle for independence. --Nature This is a readable book on science in India and the life of C.V. Raman, giving details of his scientific contributions and controversies in which he was involved, interwoven with many anecdotes and personal sidelights. --Applied Optics Confronts great issues of self-reliance, devotion and integrity, well put here in the context of science and technology by the thoughtful biographer. --Scientific American The book, by a practicing physicist, reflects sound scholarship and scientific knowledge in a very readable style. It includes mini-glimpses of some eminent Indian scientists. . . . a popular and clear exposition of the Raman Effect and of the physics of sound and music. . . . and a discussion of the famous Born-Raman controversy. There are also some insightful commentaries on Indian science. This book surely takes an important place in the literature of the history of physics. --Choice
