Journals of Brother Roger of Taizé, Volume 4: 1977-2005

Overview

This fourth and final volume of the personal journals of Roger Schutz-Marsauche (1915-2005) begins in 1977 and ends with his death in 2005. It covers the day-to-day life of the Taize Community, an ecumenical monastic community known for its music and contemplative style of worship, and for its work with young adults around the world. It also describes the travels of Brother Roger, at the end of each year, with a team of young adults to places of poverty across the world--with boat-people on the South China Sea, with slum-dwellers in Nairobi, Kenya, and with indigenous Americans in the south of Chile. In addition, Brother Roger speaks of his encounters with significant people, including several popes and the secretary general of the United Nations.

Reviews

""Reading Brother Roger's recent journals was distinctly refreshing. Brother Roger speaks deeply and honestly from his experience, understanding, and heart. His words communicate the clarity of heart and simplicity of Taizé that reflect the universal longing of young people and students seeking God's purpose or seeking meaning for their lives. Whether quoting Mother Teresa or other famous people, or writing about one of the brothers, or sharing a prayer, Brother Roger shows that working for peace in our troubled and violent world is best lived out in community."" --Wilma Jakobsen, Coordinator, Volmoed Youth Leadership Training Programme, South Africa ""With Brother Roger's blessing, the Taizé community initiated what became an abiding spiritual, pastoral, and humanitarian outreach to the newly independent Ukrainian society (1991). By sharing the ecumenical spirit and promoting simple songs of prayer, Brother Roger inspired young generations across the globe. That such a man of peace was violently killed is a powerful paradox, a mystery, ultimately a sacrament--one that fully unites him with Christ. It is in the legacy of peace, fraternity, and Christian and human unity embodied in the Taizé community we see most clearly who Brother Roger was--and who he remains for the world today. The prophetic ministry and martyrdom of Brother Roger are a great treasure for all Christians, for all humanity."" --Borys Gudziak, Metropolitan Archbishop of Philadelphia, the Ukrainian Catholic Church ""Here is the folly of the gospel overwhelmed by friendship and sparkling with freshness. Every entry of Brother Roger's journals is a season of the spirit, each place and person bears the divine imprint and reveals the greater tug of Christ's yoke. Joy and simplicity dance even in the darkness of poverty and doubt. The chronicles of toil and tears in founding Taizé for all generations and for generations to come take us to the very heart of God in solidarity with the world's poorest. To the refrain 'Where can God be?' comes the unshakeable assurance, 'Right beside you in the miracles of reconciliation and resurrection.'"" --Smitha Prasadam, Bishop of Huddersfield, Church of England
