Overview

"This third volume of the personal journals of Roger Schutz-Marsauche (1915-2005) covers the years from 1972 to 1976. Brother Roger was the founder and first prior of the Taize Community in France, an ecumenical monastic community known for its music and contemplative style of worship, and for its work with young adults around the world. This volume covers the final preparations and the opening of the ""Council of Youth,"" an attempt to take seriously the desire for renewal of church and society of the younger generations and to orient it in a positive direction. Brother Roger also speaks of the life of the community and its many visitors, his personal spiritual journey, and the trips he took to different parts of the world, notably, at the end of 1976, to a poor neighborhood of Calcutta with an intercontinental team of young people."

Reviews

"""This evocative journal reveals the spiritual heart of Brother Roger and the community he founded and is an opportunity for the reader to experience the Taize community intimately. Whether you have had the opportunity to experience Taize personally or have participated in the movement's legacies across the world, this third volume of the series offers further insights. An ongoing spiritual autobiography, Brother Roger's journals elucidate the complexities of the life of one of the most important spiritual figures of the twentieth century."" --Sheryl A. Kujawa-Holbrook, professor of Christian histories, Claremont School of Theology ""When I served as the provost of the University of Dayton, Mary Brown, my assistant, and I had the privilege of working with Taiz's team that organized in May of 1992, their first Pilgrimage of Trust in the United States. After several weeks of scouting the local neighborhoods and churches, the brothers had a conference call with Bro. Roger. I was in the room. After positive updates on the brothers' work, Bro. Roger asked, 'Are there any risks?' The brothers replied 'Yes, several.' Bro. Roger said, 'Good! Let's do it anyway!' A man of great faith and courage, Bro. Roger founded a unique and marvelous ecumenical religious community."" --James Heft, scholar in residence, University of Dayton ""It is truly enriching to read Brother Roger's reflections. The third volume of his journal offers an insight into his deep commitment to make God's love visible in the world. The reader will encounter a remarkable Christian leader who had a strong passion to engage with the youth, to accompany the poor and the oppressed, and through prayer and service to advance reconciliation among Christians and the unity of the whole human family."" --Anne Burghardt, general secretary, Lutheran World Federation"
